I began thinking about retirement when I was 25 or 26 years of age. I had a sudden awakening when I met a 70 year of man who had to work to continue to eat and sleep indoors. He was employed in federal civil service for some 40 years and at the age of 65 he quit and withdrew all of his built up retirement funds. He then invested those funds in a business that failed. He had bet his future and lost so now he was out of options; he had to work. I might have been just like him if I had not met him and learned from his experience. Later while I was attending graduate school I discovered that Social Security was not viable at the current and forecasted rate of spending so my spouse and I decided to make some hard choices. I am now 71 years of age and we are living comfortably but not extravagantly because we made those hard decisions.
