Crooks have been skimming credit and debit cards for years now. The information on these cards are not encrypted, so anyone with a smidgen of sense can steal your information. This “skimming” first started when retail store and restaurant employees would dishonestly run cards through a reader before ringing up the card owners sale. It moved on to skimmers for ATM’s, and in the last few years, these crooks have added gas pumps as an skimming tool for debit cards. Specialists in fraud detection and prevention at Gartner Research say that ATM and debit card fraud is at an all time high….possibly because of the poor economic conditions around the world.
