Indianapolis, Indiana will be the site of this year’s National FFA convention October 21-24. FFA is an acronym standing for Future Farmers of America–a United States youth organization for students of middle and high school ages. In some areas elementary students are being phased into the program and a few college chapters have been chartered, as well. It was originally founded in 1928 and now has membership numbering well over a half million youngsters nationwide and in Guam, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
It was first known as Future Farmers of America but in 1988 the official name was changed to the National FFA to more accurately reflect the wider scope of the educational practices that include all areas of agribusiness, not just that of food production. Its purpose is to provide education for agricultural pursuits with a great emphasis on leadership development.
Chapter members compete against one another in shows around the country displaying livestock and crops, showmanship skills and public speaking ability. The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in students’ lives by developing their potential for leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. Their motto is: Learning to do, doing to learn, earning to live and living to serve. Former President Jimmy Carter is an FFA alumnus.

Oddly, in spite of growing up on a farm, my knowledge of FFA was limited to seeing the boys in their jackets. When I was a high school student, girls joined FHA instead. Given my mother and grandmother, I fear that would have been an “over my dead body” type of decision. I was college bound–they were both determined!

a bit of hard work never done anyone any harm, they can learn more skills on the farm than in any college or school, thanks for sharing ken.

lets face it.. without agriculture.. we would all be dead! If people do not enter this career in the future, the only farms will be factory farms.. a trend that is scary for so many reasons.

My fiance is from Indiana and he grew up on a farm, but I never knew about this. As far as my knowledge goes of the surrounding areas, and I’m from Ohio so I’m aware of the geographical landscapes, I think this is a great program for youths.

Agriculture is still a necessary field of endeavour among us which must not be taken for granted. Without root crops we will be left to slaughter and eat all the animals which is a rather narrowminded approach to keeping humankind alive.

Lets hear it for farmers! Thankless job, high suicide rate and vital for our economy!

That sounds like a great idea! I would have loved to do something like that. We have similar here but they are hard to get on and now all the farms are closing down or struggling at the least. The farmers I new have got rid of their cows and now have farm shops. very sad:-(
