The baby chicks are now just a bit over a week old and they are growing quickly! Enjoy the pics and the video.

All twelve of the baby chicks have made it through the first week and appear to be healthy and thriving. They are curious about everything and are starting to peek out of the box to catch glimpses of the outside world.

They are so funny to watch. They follow each other around, almost like they’re thinking, “Hey, if she’s going somewhere, she may know something I don’t so I’d better go too.”

They sleep on top of each other. All twelve will bunch up in one corner of the box and create one big fluffy pile of baby chicks.

They are eating a lot and have probably doubled in size during the past week. In addition to the chicken feed, they’ve been eating mealy worms and various small bugs that the kids find and give to them. The chicks love playing tug-of-war with small worms too.

The chicks are friendly and don’t object to being held.
Not all the chicks have names yet, but my two do have names. My two are ISA Brown hens (all the others are Ameraucanas) and I’ve named them Rojo and Suh. Rojo is Spanish for red (I probably should have gone with the feminine form, Roja, but Rojo it is). Suh is named after one of Nebraska’s top defensive football players, Ndamukong Suh. I chose a Nebraska player because these ISA Browns are somewhat red in color, and one of Nebraska’s nicknames is Big Red. I hope Suh the chick doesn’t get as big as Suh the football player!

It’s too bad they don’t stay cute and fuzzy for long. There was a story in the news recently about city dwellers raising chickens in their backyards. Apparently the neighbours are raising a stink about the smell.

Seeing how fragile these baby chicks are makes raising the young worth while.

hello, i am raising phesants and quails. I have named seven of them already, they are: Twitter, Scooter, Baily, Bettle, Pebbles, Bootzy, and Moe. As you can tell by the names of my chicks I do not like normal names a normal person would have. Can you please list a few names that you think I could name my chicks.

Hello Lauren,
Wow, I’ll bet raising pheasant and quail will be fun! I like the names you’ve chosen. Here are the names of some of our chickens … feel free to use any of these names that you like.
Scout, Kuckaburra, Reepicheep, Merry, Pippin, Suh, Rojo, Joey, Caspian, Chloe, Dot, Amber, Siena, Shadow, Rosie, and Sunshine.
Other fun names might be: Chaucer, Dante, Shakespeare, Marlowe, Spenser, Dickens, Donne, Milton, Edgar Allen Poe, and Thurber.
Cheers and best wishes,
Joel
