Wire Fox Terrier breed originated in the British Isles in the 17th century to chase fox and other small game from their dens. This dog is in the Terrier and vermin hunter groups and possess a keen sense of those hunting skills even though they are not predominantly used for that purpose anymore. Pet owners should be aware that this breed is always ready to dig until the prey is found.
With all the alertness and quick movement this canine has, they will be boldly ready to pounce with sincerity. Temperament traits include an astute focus, great learning ability and willingness to be a gentle companion to children of all ages. The playful nature will tirelessly entertain the entire family and adequately become the best watch dog all rolled into one spry, happy pet.
Weight for the Wire Fox Terrier ranges around 15 to 21 pounds and is about 15.5 inches tall.
Physical characteristics for the Wire Fox Terrier are so obviously Terrier traits. The elongated snout holds a beard from the jowl which accentuate the rectangular shaped head. Eyes are relatively small, deep set and dark colored with a circular shape. Ears are small V shaped that have flaps neatly folded over drooping toward the cheeks. The nose is black, however if not a show dog, it might be pink, cherry, white or spotted.
Colors of the hair are a white base with brown markings of the face, ears and usually black saddle or a large patch of color on the back or toward the tail. You will also see a buff tri-colored coat, which resembles a ginger hue most often times without the black markings.
Agility and specific gait patterns are definite signs of a well rounded Wire Fox Terrier since they are accomplished winners of awards in rally feats and Kennel shows as well. This breed needs nearly constant stimulation, attention and exercise too, otherwise becomes bored. They intermingle well with other pets with social introduction needed when they are puppies, so they will not assault the smaller pets as they would their prey.
Highly intelligent, the Wire Fox Terrier is a keen thinker, friendly and mentioned by professional breeders to not to be a dog breed for everyone. They can constantly stalk, dig and yelp when they bark. It is best to talk to many people before considering taking a Wire Fox Terrier for a family pet, so the family and dog will be well suited for each other and not disappointed if they are not.
