Tips for Rabbit Owners

Rabbits are a unique type of pet and there are things you will need to know to understand your rabbit.

Before you buy or adopt a rabbit, there are a few things that you need to know, and the interent is a plethora of information for such things. Not only do you need to make sure that you will be feeding your rabbit right, but you need to make sure you have the right type of home for them, give them the right amount of attention and many other things besides!

Rabbits are prey. It is vital that you know this and you remember it when deciding on placing them outside. They need to be placed in a secure home, with a run that cannot be accessed by any mean animals, such as foxes, and preferably lifted up from the floor. A home on stilts can be bought for pretty cheap and is perfect for your furry little friends!

Rabbits are easily startled. If your kids are noisy, or not particularly sensitive to animals, you may want to think twice about buying them a rabbit. They will run away from loud noises or sudden movements, and you do not want to be searching your home (or garden) endlessly for the little critter, should your kids have scared him or her.

Picking up a rabbit will scare it. They will automatically believe that you are a hunter and that you will eat it, so they may kick out or try and run off, so again, supervising kids with their rabbits is a must! If the rabbit doesn’t run off or kick out, it may lay completely still and limp, and scare your children by making them believe it is dead. However, the more you handle your rabbit, the more it will become used to you and eliminate the risks of such events.

The right food is important for caring for your rabbit, unless you want to have costly Vet bills. There are many foods that rabbits can eat, and some of it is things that will be laying around in your kitchen. However, there are some foods that will cause your rabbit to have some problems and the only way to avoid this is to look up and thoroughly research these foods.

You may choose to have your rabbit, whether it be male or female, neutered. This not only combats urinating and spraying in your home, similar to cats, but can also prevent the female rabbits getting any kind of reproductive cancer, which is remarkably common!

Try to find a veterinarian who specializes in rabbits as many vets don’t actually don’t have that much experience with rabbits, more with cats and dogs. A rabbit specialist will be able to pinpoint problems more easily and therefore make for less expensive bills!

A rabbit is a long term commitment and can live for up to ten years. It is a good idea to think about this pet very seriously before you decide to get one, and also whether or not you will be able to care for him or her properly!
