Times of Crisis- Flood

Don’t know what to do in a flood or just want to make a checklist, then read on.

The year 2011, is anything but dull. It has been one  heart wrenching year when it comes to weather. Tornados have taken not only homes and belongings from people, but also many lives. Floods have also been a issue for so many near rives, lakes, creeks, ditches, and levees. I myself was run off from my home and have yet to return. Luckily, I have family whose home was under the protection of God, as he decided to spare the little county we live in. During the time of the flood I noticed no one knew what to do or had forgot to do something during the flood that could be crucial. Here are some things you should do incase of a flood:
If you are choosing to leave your home:

  • unplug everything
  • turn off the main power
  • have water, electricity, and gas turned off by the companies
  • take any valuables documents with you (social security cards, birth certificates, degrees, etc)
  • make sure to have identification with you at all times coming and going to a neighborhood
  • tie down any outside and inside possessions that you will be leaving
  • carry plenty of money with you as you may have to drive awhile to find a hotel/motel
  • take a whistle and flashlight incase your car breaks down
  • write down emergency numbers to be able to call to be able to see when you can come home
  • take all prescriptions with you
  • please take all pets with you
  • take any valuables that you feel can’t be replaced (pictures, jewelry, etc.)

If you are planning to stay:

  • keep plenty of bottled water to last for at least 1 month
  • keep plenty of canned food to last for at least 1 month
  • put all valuable documents in a safe deposit
  • keep plenty of batteries and flashlights with you
  • carry a weather radio on you at all times
  • keep a whistle for just incase measures
  • keep children and pets within eyesight at all times
  • keep important documents on you (medical insurance card, driver’s license, etc.)
  • keep a first-aid kit (alcohol, peroxide, band-aids, cottonballs, tweezers, etc..)
  • have rubber boots and gloves

Please make sure all animals are taken care of whether they are with you, at a neighbors, or at a family members home. Take with your pet:

  • vaccination records
  • food
  • water
  • food & water bowl
  • some toys
  • bedding
  • pet crate
  • puppy pads
  • kitty litter & box
  • any medicenes

If you are not able to take your animal with you please contact shelters, pet resorts, or family and make arrangments for your pets until you arrive home:

  1. For anyone living in a flood-prone area, flood protection is always a must. Although you can’t always depend on a flood happening, it’s important to depend on a service that can stop a flood at any time. With ES mobile flood protection, that’s exactly what you’re getting.
