The Best Lap Dog Breeds
Who says a lap dog has to be a small yappy little creature? Some of the best lap dogs are the ones that take up two laps, or more.
Let us look at some dogs which are great pets, and perfect lap dogs. If you are looking for a dog to keep your lap, sofa, or bed, warm, these are some terrific dog breeds to consider.
Golden Retriever

The Golden Retriever is an all round terrific pet. As a retrieving breed they are noted for having a “soft mouth”. In other words they typically do not bite as hard as a breed that was bred for the purpose of killing and tearing vermin to shreds. Golden Retrievers are guaranteed to keep a lap nice and warm with their long, thick, coat.
Irish Wolfhound

The Irish Wolfhound is one of the rarer breeds of lap dog. Noted for their skills at hunting they are active dogs who enjoy being outdoors. Nonetheless it is quite easy to see that the Irish Wolfhound is ideally suited as a lap dog. You might even need to add a second lap with this breed of dog.
English Setter

The English Setter is one of the smaller lap dogs on our list, but still a great companion. Highly intelligent and alert, these dogs are keen when out on the trails, bred to assist a hunter, they want to please their owner, and if that means keeping a lap warm now and again, so be it.
Portuguese Water Dog

This big black dog is also an active breed, made popular following the United States President Obama’s decision to get one, named Bo, whom you can read about. Indeed the Portuguese Water Dog is a friendly dog well suited to life as a pampered lap dog. Worth noting, they are considered a non-shedding, low allergy dog.
Bloodhound

Blood Hounds, and indeed, most hounds, love a good lap. Blood hounds are scent hounds. They use their long ears, slobber, and skin folds, to trap scents in the air while they are on the trail of something. They do have a tendency to howl.

to elysiamarie..
the link is only partially serious.. I also needed to mention Greyhounds and Great Danes – serious lap dogs, but couldnt find a copyright free picture to use. I will try to find one for a mutt – the best of all dogs!

Oh yes now these are my kind of lap dog!!
I haven’t got any pics of Greyhounds or Great Danes but I could get you a Greyhound one if you want one still, (they won’t be sitting on peoples laps though) we have greyhound kennels where I keep the horse and my friend has a lurcher that is about 99.9% black greyhound, I can get her to sit it on her lap, she probably has a pic like that already.

My Doberman will be 2 in October 2011 and he is already 73lbs. He really knows how to warm up a lap and hog the couch.

My friend has a lap dog , a mixed breed Labrador. Big one, when he barks makes you afraid but when he is in his playful mode, he can melt your heart with his cute cute gestures.

I had a Golden Retriever and Labrador mix growing up which was the best lap dog! I miss her so much. I love big dogs although now I have a smaller dog, and she is just as wonderful and sweet.

We have a Black Lab mix who weighs 116 lbs. Now I know he is small compared to these cuties but it is still hilarious how he thinks he is a lap dog. He also thinks he is human. He will lay between us in bed with his head right up on a pillow
If I had to pick one of these “lap dogs” I would pick the Irish Wolfhound, very cute!

LOL. Those are some mighty BIG lap dogs. Just because a dog is big doesn’t mean it thinks it’s big. Most of them still think they are happy little puppies.
