I am absolutely disgusted at the new trend in the fish industry. I encourage everyone to refuse to buy any fish that has been colored, and to go one step further and boycott stores that sell them.
The trend is called Tattooed goldfish, but it is not just goldfish that are being subjected to the whims of consumers. Make no mistake, this is cruelty.
Applying ink and coloring fish is not a new thing, consumers have been buying painted fish for years, although they may not have realized it, but now it is quite apparent that the fish are definitely tampered with so there is no excuse.
In this current trend, which is only now getting the attention of the world, but originated in China several years earlier, fish are being “tattooed”, but a laser.
In the past fish have been painted with non-toxic paint, or injected with dyes and sold as “painted glass fish”. It was bad enough that people purchased these fish, but this next step is certainly questionable, as the fish are removed from the water and blasted with a laser!
They are not just in China either, these Cichlids were photographed in a pet store in New York. These fish are naturally a pale color without the red and blue markings.
I urge you not to buy these fish and to tell shop keepers that have them you think it is cruel, please walk out without spending any money in the store. This will send a message to the store that the public does not support cruelty to pets – including fish!
