Spay and Neuter Your Pets

Why I think people should always spay and neuter their pets and never breed.
People are always making all kinds of excuses when it comes to giving reasons for not spaying and neutering their pets, but the truth is there are not any good reasons for not having this procedure done. I don’t believe people should breed their dogs and cats for profit, because there are so many other animals already here that need homes so much. It is a life and death situation, theirs.
A very common excuse for not fixing an animal is that a person cannot afford to have it done. But the truth of the matter is, it is a one-time cost. Fixing an animal is an ‘out-patient’ surgery; it is usually easily done and finished, and heals fast and on its own. There are rarely complications, so you don’t have any extra costs blindsiding you. Now think about this; your pet gets pregnant and in no time you find yourself paying vet bills for the birth, puppies and mother check-ups, costs for caring for puppies until they can leave their mother and making sure the mother stays healthy after the births. Not to mention there is no guarantee you will be able to sell any of the puppies to make profit. Now you find yourself stuck with anywhere from 1-10 babies; which you have to pay for, or sadly surrender to a shelter or pound, further increasing euthanasia rates. No offense, but I don’t see how anyone who claims to love animals can do something like this, when it is so easily avoided. So in the long run not having a pet could cost you more. And if you really are hurting that much for money, there are some places who will fix your pet for free, and they’re easy to find. So money is no longer and excuse!
Some people want their dog or cat to get pregnant because they think it would be fun to raise puppies or kittens, and because they are so cute! Well, as hard as it is to believe animal shelters are filled with puppies and kittens that they cannot adopt out. Puppies and kittens that they are sometimes forced to euthanize because they just don’t have the space or money to keep them any longer. How sad is it to think that BABY animals are being killed because ‘no one wants them.’ Well the truth is there are people that want them, but they just go about it the wrong way. They either have their own pets provide cuddly fluff balls, or they buy from breeders because they believe the young from purebreds will be better and healthier. The truth is no matter where you get a puppy, if they are treated right they will all grow up to love you unconditionally, breeding does not affect a dogs loyalty and love. And there can be many problems with pure bred pups due to over breeding a mother dog. And when you buy from breeders you may possibly be supporting puppy mills and people who mistreat their animals. Wouldn’t it feel so much better getting a young animal from a shelter, saving and raising them? And if you really think you want a purebred more than a lovable mutt, then listen closely! 25% of animals in shelters ARE PUREBREDS, and I guarantee shelters are not making you pay hundreds, even thousands for their purebreds.
“I don’t want my dog or cat to feel like less of a guy.” Oh come on…fixing your animal will not make your pet feel weak or embarrassed. There is MINIMAL discomfort to the pet after the surgery, and it goes away fast. The truth is a fixed animal is MUCH happier animal. They have a much more comfortable, care free life. They do not have to go through all the stresses of being “in season” and it gives male dogs less testosterone so they are less “aggressive” or dominating. Don’t worry about your animal being hurt physically or mentally from having this fixed, it’s quite the opposite.
If you don’t try to offer an explanations for still having an ‘intact’ animal, and you just don’t feel like getting it done, think about this. While you just feel too lazy to do this favor for your pet, there are 6-8 MILLION animals being brought into animal shelters every year, and only half of those animals are adopted out. Do you know what happens to the others? They get euthanized, 3-4 million lives getting ended because there are too many animals getting pregnant, having babies and bringing more unwanted pets into the world.
So please, if you really want to call yourself an animal lover go get your pet fixed! Don’t breed them, when you breed them you’re killing shelter animals. That isn’t love, in one way or another it is selfishness. Sorry if anything I’ve said is offensive, but this is something I feel strongly about this and people who can’t do this simple thing really bother me. There is no excuse, so don’t try to make one.
