Safety for Your Pet Bird

Keeping your pet bird safe is a must. When we make the commitment to adopt a feathered friend we become their human parents. As with all animals, birds are a gift on this earth and we should treat them how we want to be treated.

Pet birds in general are very social animal beings and have a tendency to become very curious at times. They are very intelligent and can get into mischief if not monitored. When it comes to safety, there are a number of things that come to mind. A pet bird’s wings should be clipped on a regular basis to prevent flying capability. This can be done at any bird store as this grooming technique is just like getting a hair cut. Their nails should be trimmed as well to avoid accidental scratches to themselves.

Your pet bird’s cage should have a secure latch of some sort to prevent your bird from escaping. When your pet bird is spending time out of his or her cage, it is crucial to monitor your bird at all times. Most birds like to chew and can be destructive to household items. This can result in an injury to your bird. Bird proofing your home is a good idea if one can not observe their bird constantly while out of his or her cage.
Adding a calcium supplement to your bird’s water will save your female bird’s life.

Female birds will lay eggs once they reach maturity, even without a male present. A lack of calcium in a female bird’s diet will cause her to become egg bound. This is known as a calcium deficiency and will lead to death. This is easily prevented for when adding a calcium supplement to her daily nutrition, her calcium level will remain consistent and no egg binding should occur. A calcium supplement can be purchased at your local bird store.

A pet bird can live a long and prosperous life with the proper care. Providing fresh food and water daily are all part of responsible care. It is crucial that you only supply bottled water for your pet bird, as the chlorine in tap water in extremely toxic to birds and will result in death.

I hope these tips will help protect your bird for years to come. Birds are amazing animals and to know that we are providing our pet with a safe home to live in, we are saving the world one bird at a time! As their human parents we will devote our love to their care and well being, for being a responsible pet owner makes the world a better place. Your pet bird will thank you for caring so much about him/her and for taking the time to enhance the safety of their everyday living.
