Irish Setters

Irish Setters are energetic and fun loving dogs.

If you are looking for a guard dog, then this is not the right dog for you. But they are excellent hunting dogs and do great with any type of hunting. They get along well with other pets and people. Not to mention that they are great with children. If not properly trained they can become quite a nuisance so be sure to be firm when training them but not too firm for they are very sensitive dogs. They are really easy to housebreak so that part of the training shouldn’t be too hard.

Irish Setters have a load of medical problems. They are prone to bloating so feed in small portions throughout the day instead of feeding them one big meal. They tend to have epilepsy, elbow and hip dysplasia, eye problems, severs skin disorders, ear inflammation, PRA, hypothyroidism, and auto-immune disease.

These dogs aren’t recommended to live in apartments and they do better in the country rather than the city. They need long, daily walks and they love running free in a fenced in yard. If they don’t get the right amount of exercise they can become difficult to handle.

Irish Setters need daily brushing to avoid their hair getting tangled. When they are molting they have to be brushed more than usual. Only bathe them when it is necessary. They eleven to fifteen years.
