It is not a great thing to worry if you puppy keeps biting whatever it gets near its mouth. It is a natural sensation and is instinctive that it gets this, like human babies used to get when they develop their milk teeth. But if you fail to stop if as it tends to reach the adulthood, then your pet may have the danger of biting someone who is not used to it. This may turn to be a pain in the neck for you when your friends or relatives come home often. So read along, to know a few tips on how to prevent this from happening:
§ START EARLY – It is good to start as early as possible to rain your puppy not to bite. If not you’ll see your puppy turn into an adult dog all of a sudden. It is better to start when it is 6 weeks old.
§ Never take the approach of corporal punishment. This may tempt to bite more. Make your puppy understand that biting is harmful. When he bites exaggerate your expression and let him know that what he has done is wrong. You may even do this by shouting “ouch!” or “No!” so that he will realize that he has been tough.
§ Never have gaps during your training period. Continue giving the same reactions even when his bites turn soft. Make him understand that a bite in itself is harmful irrespective of whether it is soft or not.
§ Show him that you love him when he does not bite. This must be done at the time when he starts to lick instead of biting. Give him a gentle pat or a special biscuit that he loves.
§ For a well structured guidance it is better to enroll your pup in an “Enhance your pet’s obedience” kind of program. This will lessen your work and will also teach your puppy to how to behave with people.
§ Make sure that your puppy gets enough of the “teething” toys so that he gives a way out to his instinctive feeling to bite at the same time does not cause any harm to anyone.
§ Take a stroll everyday with your pup and be consistent in giving him regular exercises so that he does not feel bored or dull and gets the biting temptation.
§ Try to create a uniform environment by telling everyone at home to not to encourage him biting by giving the same reaction. It is because if your dog is very much affectionate to someone at home it may try to take advantage of them and continue his biting habit.
§ If all your efforts seem to be a failure then never hesitate to take him to a vet to find out if something is wrong with your dog.
§ Never encourage tough game that may teach him to be aggressive and rude.
§ It is also not a good idea to leave your dog alone with your children if he has not learned not to bite.
All these tips will not only help you to train your dog to not to use his teeth but it will also relieve you of some harm that it may cause by biting.
