How to Keep Pet Tortoises

This article is about how to keep tortoises as your pet. There are four simple steps need to be followed when keeping tortoises.

Many people do not really like to keep exotic pets because they think it is not that easy to keep them and have need of high maintenance. However this is not true. For example, keeping pets tortoises are not that complex and require low maintenance.

1) Setting up a home

The first thing need to consider is to set up a home before bringing home a new pet tortoise. Tortoises may spend a huge deal of time in the water. For that reason, you should set up an aquarium that offers a place for your pet to climb and dry out and also take a dip. Pets

2) Feeding Your Pet

It is very easy to feed a tortoise compared to other pets. This is because tortoises can stay alive for quite some time without eating. To feed your tortoise, you can cut fresh meat and throw it into the water. Do not feed your pet with cooked meat and take out any uneaten food in order to avoid spoiling. Beside, you can also feed your tortoise with vegetables.

3) Hibernating

Tortoises’ heartbeats become slow and their temperature is lowered during the hibernating period. Some tortoises prefer to hide under leaves, bush or sand on the land while others hibernate in the water and bury themselves in the muddy bottom. Hence, you must provide your tortoise with a place to hibernate within your aquarium by learning more about the tortoise you have chosen in order to find out what kind of hibernation area is necessary for your pet.

4) Handling Your Tortoise

It is important to always handle your tortoise with care and respect. Always make sure that your pet eats properly and change the water when it is necessary.

  1. very nice one

  2. Am I reading this correct – tortoises like under to hibernate water in the mud ????? Are we taking sense here for an air breathing reptile?

  3. “Tortoises may spend a huge deal of time in the water
. However they still need to be able to move toward to surface in order to breathe because tortoises take in air through lungs.”

This is completely incorrect. This is referring to turtles not tortoises. Tortoises are land dwellers and need water just to wade in.
