How to Care for Goldfish?

Yes the simple goldfish is cute and fun to have. But without proper care they will only last for a few months to a year. But when cared for properly they can last for years to come. Some are even reported to outlast their owner.

Housing

Lets start off simple. Some websites will say 10 gallons per goldfish. Don’t you think that’s a little crazy? I own 10 medium goldfish in a 40 gallon tank and they are plenty happy. Tanks at pet stores cost about a dollar per gallon. So yes i bought mine for 40 bucks. But even that is expensive for your son or daughter to have a couple of goldfish. Plus you have to include a filter and ornaments. So a couple of goldfish will happily live in a 20 gallon tank even 10 is plenty. You will also have to buy pebbles. Goldfish like to bottom feed on their spare time which they have plenty of. So buy pebbles that are small even so they can swallow and spit it out without choking on it. But you can also buy big pebbles. Don’t buy pebbles that they can’t spit out this can lead to death as they will choke on it. Other than flooring also buy live plants to provide them with plenty of oxygen as they will also nibble on them when your not there to feed them. Also get structure they can swim around. Without it they will be bored all day and every now and then move the ornaments around so they can explore the tank.

Feeding

Keeping a well balance diet is important. Unlike other fish at a pet store goldfish are not tropical fish, that means they can not live with tropical fish. Also they don’t have the same diet. Goldfish can consume veggies in your fridge easily without a problem. They don’t require as much protein as tropical fish. But change there diet everyday to spice up their life. One day give them meal worms, another veggies, then another day give them fish flakes. This keeps them happy and not as bored waiting for that one kind of food. Also the feces should come out as small segments. A long string of feces is a sign of over feeding so please look out for that.
