Horses are People Too

How to better understand your horse and communicate with him.

I truly believe that horses are no different then people. They have their own personalities, they like some people and other horses and dislike others. They can get scared and lonely and need companionship just like us. Once you understand this you can prevent alot of behavioral problems and fix some that are already there.

Most problems horses have are man made, some are just that horses personality. If the problems that you are having are man made they are usually easily fixed. If it’s the horses personality thats giving you problems well thats a different story. First you need to understand who the horse is. Is he being playful but you see it as hard to catch? Is he a dominate horse and you haven’t proved your his alpha horse yet? Figuring out your horses personality is a very easy thing it just takes time and effort on your part but is well worth it in the end, unless like some people you and your horses personalities clash then you have a problem and it may be time to get a new horse for the sake of your horse and you.

The problem is people try to make the horse fit into their life and what they want to do.If the horse doesn’t enjoy doing it he won’t give it his all and will end up being a very unhappy horse which will cause him to rebel in many different ways. I have a six years old gelding that I got because I wanted to do reing cow horse. He was breed well athletic enough but he hated the reining part of it. I noticed that he would act up in the arena didn’t want to work,But out on the praire rounding up cows he was like a different horse he loved it. So either I sold him and got a horse that liked to do what I wanted or I kept him and did what makes hime happy. I chose the latter.

Before you buy a horse see if you can spend sometime with the horse your looking at. Everyone gets vet checks rides the horse checks out it’s breeding to see if it’s breed for what they want to do,but how often do people spend sometime with the horse to see if your a good fit personality wise. If the horse enjoys his job, or is he unhappy and fights when asked to work? These are things to think about next time your looking to buy a horse. When working with horses remember their people too they have thoughts and feelings too.

  1. I have always thought this way about horses as well, having been with them and loved them for more than 45 years and it’s terrific to see that you also understand their point of view very well. If there were more people like you around then there would be less problem horses because as you so rightly say it’s humans that create the problems and not the horses!!!
