A beginner’s guide on things to consider before adopting a hamster.
Hamster is such a small and furry cute creature. You really want to have one but at the same time you are worried if you can’t handle this vulnerable friend.
First of all, you need to know whether you are a suitable type of person to keep a hamster. You love hammy so much but your nature actually makes you more suitable to be the owner of other pets such as cats, dogs or fish or not even an animal at all. So, maybe you can check things out in the internet and have a research first before getting a hamster you like at the pet shop.
There are different breeds of hamster such as Syrian hamster, Chinese hamster and dwarf hamster. Whilst, dwarf hamster can be categorized into several groups such as Russian Campbell, winter white, and Roborovski hamster – choose which ever you like but if you are a beginner, Syrian hamster is the best for you as it is easier to be handled and tamed.
Once you decide which breed you are looking for, now it’s time to adopt your new pet. Well, you need to start considering several things such as what is the type of hamster cage or housing you want to use, what type of the shaving are you going to use for the housing, where are you going to place its cage and when are exactly the right time to go for adoption and indeed a lot more question will arise after hamsters start living with you.
As for the first question, there are several types of hamster cage such as, aquarium housing, wire or metal cage that you can buy along with the hamster but it is best for you to prepare the cage first before welcoming your pet home. The bigger the cage, the happier your hamster would be. The cage is best to be place at a dim place where there is no direct sunlight as your hamster may get dehydrated if the cage is being heat up.
The best time to get the hamster is around dawn time when the hamster starts to be active. Hamster is nocturnal and some says they are crepuscular. Therefore, if you can get to the pet store during late evening, you will have more opportunity to really know the hamster that you are going to take back home. It is a great feeling to see which of them are the most active and cute one, or depends on which character of hamster you would like to have.
So, are you ready for an adoption?
P/s: don’t forget their food and more importantly, their toys!
