Everything you need to know about egg binding in female birds.
When breeding birds it is very important to consider the possibility of egg binding in female birds. The causes of egg binding result in a lack of calcium, as well as a female bird entering reproduction at an age younger than her sexual maturity. Although a male and female bird can mate during adolescence, it is crucial to wait until your birds are at their peak of maturity before attempting to breed them. As every bird is different and each species matures at their own time, it is beneficial to research your bird’s history to learn every aspect of their reproductive system.
A calcium supplement is an effective way to help prevent egg binding. Calcium supplements can be found in most bird stores as well as some pet retailers. This supplement is usually administered into your bird’s fresh drinking water in the form of a liquid substance. Having calcium in your bird’s diet gives them the added nutrient they need to be able to pass their eggs. Calcium is a must when breeding birds. Note: When NOT breeding birds, your female bird will still lay eggs, even without a male present.
If your female bird becomes egg bound, the signs that will be present include: sitting on the floor of the cage or aviary, lethargy and refusing to eat or drink.
Once these behaviors are noticed, you must react promptly and efficiently. A hospital cage should always be on hand anytime you are raising birds and inside the hospital cage should be nesting material pre-shaped into a nest. The female will be too tired so it must be arranged for her. Next a little dish of food and water should be placed inside the cage. Gently pick your egg bound bird up off of the cage floor, give her a drop of calcium orally and place her softly onto the pre-made nest inside the hospital cage. Place this cage in a quiet room and place a damp cloth over the top of the cage. This allows just the right amount of humidity to take place. Turn out all of the lights and close the door. It is extremely important to leave her alone and resist the temptation of checking on her. At this point you have done everything possible to help her pass the egg. Check her the following morning and no sooner. If she had been egg bound for too long before realization, it may be too late to save her. However, if everything was done correctly and in a timely manner, the chances of her surviving are very good.
Always be prepared, think ahead and gain as much knowledge as possible about your birds. Bird egg binding is a serious and life threatening condition that should not be taken lightly. Awareness of this preventative situation will enable you to save the life of your much loved feathered friend.
