Dogs and Children: What to Consider When Selecting a Dog Breed

If you have children and are looking for a dog as a family pet, then you need to pay careful attention to the temperament of the particular breed that you choose. The younger the children, the more important this is.

1) Golden retrievers are a docile breed that are easily integrated within a family environment. Pointers, setters and Old English Sheepdogs are also amongst those that fall into these categories.
2) Alsatian, Staffordshire and Bull Terriers, Dobermans and similar breeds would probably not be suitable.

There are too many individual breeds to detail in depth here, but once having drawn up a shortlist of possibilities, take the following action.

Before making your choice you should seek advice from two or three different sources. These will include breed clubs who can inform you on the suitability of their own breed and possibly help to point you in the direction of suitable pets. Veterinary practicitioners would also prove helpful it this area as well as they will have experience of a range of dog breeds from a variety of home environments.
