Dog Training Command: Lay Down

Teach your dog to lay down on command.

Teaching your dog to lie down is a basic command. It’s also an easy command. You will only have to work on it with your dog about fifteen minutes each day. At first, it may seem like your pet will never learn it, but don’t get discouraged, they will eventually get it in time.

The only thing you will need to teach your dog to lay is a bunch of treats.

Getting Started

1.    Sit on the ground with your dog facing you.

2.    Hold a treat in your hand, and put your hand on the ground in front of your dog’s feet.

3.    While your dog is sniffing your hand trying to get the treat, GENTLY push on your dog’s back while commanding him to LAY!

After step three your dog should lie down. This is a natural reaction for your dog as they won’t want to stand while resisting your gentle but constant pressure, when they can just lie down. After they do lie down, be sure to give him/her the treat and lots of praise and pets.

Once your dog starts to get the idea that they are suppose to lie down when you tell them to, you can occasionally not give them a treat when they lie down. This will enforce the idea that they won’t get a treat every time they listen to you.

Remember that dogs will love you no matter who you are. Also, remember that a dog companion can add years to your life.
