Please consider pet adoption through one of the many rescue sites on the Internet. “RED” stands for rescue every dog and you can click here to find out more info: http://www.rescueeverydog.org Another well known site is: http://www.petfinder.com or connect with http://www.theanimalrescuesite.com to give a dog, cat or any other pet you are contemplating, your love and a second chance.
The Dachshund has become a product of gene pooling by importing German stock. During the WW1 Dachshunds were not very popular causing the decline of the breed of the early 1900’s. The meaning of the name is “badger dog”, putting this canine in the hunting/hound category. History from The American Kennel Club states they could dig earth where a badger burrowed and fight to the death with that rodent.
With the keen sense of smell and low, long bodies these dogs excel in all around above and below ground work. The short leg and strong muscular structured body move easily and swiftly without looking awkward.
The Dachshund come in three different coat groups. The smooth hair dogs require no specific grooming except an occasional combing or brushing. Wire haired and long haired need moderate, regular attention to keep them healthy and the pet owners comfortable too. The coat on the short haired dog is shinning and medium in thickness.
Hair colors are varied and numerous including all of the following: Black and cream, black and tan, blue and cream, blue and tan, chocolate and cream, chocolate and tan, cream, fawn and cream, fawn and tan, red, wheaten, wild boar, black, chocolate and fawn. Markings might be seen in the following colors as well: Brindle, dapple, sable, brindle Piebald, double dapple and Piebald.
One of the most popular breed dog, the Dachshund, are friendly, social, playful making them an ideal family pet. These dogs are so willing to please for a little of your attention along with time being exercised well.
Characteristics are the obvious long, low body and lengthy snout. Medium, almond shaped eyes on a gently tapered head with floppy, ears that are rounded at the ends complete the look that is all Dachshund. Weight of this standard size breed ranges from 15 to 28 pounds. The miniature can be as small as 8 pounds.
Clever, brave and lively are words to describe the Dachshund breed. They make excellent watch dogs along with their true devotion to the family members. Intelligence is an abundant trait of this energetic dog breed.
