Connection Through Time – a Cat Story
People often tell stories about their connection with their cats and how cats appear to have a sixth sense. This is a personal story of my cat and I, how he knew exactly what I was doing, even though he hadn’t seen me for several months.
Many years ago, as a young teacher, I was teaching in a place a long way from home. I boarded with a family on a farm and so there was no shortage of pets and other animals around the house, but I missed my cat, Casper, dearly. He was always pleased to see me when home during school holiday breaks, but it never occurred to me his attachment may have been just as strong as mine. He was still in his own home with the rest of the family, so why would he miss me?
At the end of the teaching year, I looked forward to going home. I was to be teaching only a few kilometres from home in the coming year. The trip home was a long one, 28 non-stop hours travelling by train, ferry as I crossed from one part of the country to another, and back onto another train for the final part of the journey. But as it was the last time I’d be making that particular trip, I didn’t mind. Along the way I thought of my family and of my dear cat, Casper.
I boarded the 6pm train on Friday night and finally pulled into my destination at 10 pm on Saturday. I’d told my family not to come out at that time of night, I’d catch a taxi for the short trip home. I think this was my way of showing them I’d grown up since I left home and could look after myself!
After greeting everyone at home, my mother told me that my cat, Casper, would be pleased to see me. I asked where he was.
“On your bed,” my Mother replied. “He went in there at 6pm last night and has only come out to go briefly outside since then. He hasn’t been on your bed since you were home last time”
I couldn’t believe my ears. At no stage had I told anyone what time I’d be starting my long trip home, only when they should expect me to arrive. Somehow my dear friend, Casper, had tuned into the conversation around him about my homecoming and connected with me at exactly the time my train pulled out of the station, bringing me on my homeward journey. That was the best welcome home I had ever had.

Brilliant and so well-told, Val. I certainly believe that all cats have an other-worldliness ( a sixth sense). And what a great example of that this story is. You pulled at my heartstrings, girl.

Aw-w-w-w! Yes, they do have a sixth sense, and they know when we are thinking about them in earnest. It is those thoughts that they pick up. I have several, and if one cat is missing, I’ll think hard about where he/she is. About 10 minutes or so later, that particular cat will walk up to me and rub against me. It happens so many times, I can’t count. They always “announce” that they are there, and it’s OK. I used to have a cat named “Spot”, but I called her my psychic kitty. She would always appear at the door about ten minutes after I thought about where she was, with concern. They know “stuff.” If I have an earnest talk with one of my cats, to explain something, I know they don’t understand my words, but they understand the meaning I am conveying. I’ve seen huge differences in behavior after these “talks” about behavior medication, or fights with other cats. They are amazing. Loved your story, very much.

Good story. I still miss my cat. He went on holidays in July to be back in August. He hated Whiskas tin food and preferred stir fried chicken livers with garlic and parsley. We oenped the window and he would jumo out in the roofs. Biut scary of bangers and fireworks, but he did his job clearing the building from mice. Thanks for sharing!

We always had cats when we lived in the countryside too keep the mice out of the house, The trouble was though, they often brought them in and would let them go. Nice read Val.

As a cat lover, I can relate to this. There is a special bond that only a cat lover can understand.

Great story! I think you are right – cats do have some kind of psychic connection with their humans. We once had a housesitter while we were away for two weeks. When we got home there was a note from her saying how sorry she was, that one of our cats went outside the first day and had never come back. This cat was very special to Megan, so she went outside and called. The cat came running back home.

Hi Val long time no see. I’ve been in hospital for months never mind. We have two cats and one before these two. I grew up with cats too in London. We had two females and one had a litter of 14 kittens! all survived and we managed to place all of them with nice families we hoped at least. Great article and yes cats are very; very clever and know much more than they are given credit for. Take care LB

A really enjoyable story. I have always felt that some animals have that sixth sense. We used to have a cat when I was a child and she wasn’t very friendly. We moved house frequently in those days and we always tried to leave her behind when we moved on, so you can imagine how surprised we would be when she would appear at our new homes before us to greet our our arrivals.

I’m with Lynn on this one. I enjoyed your story, it reminded me of my Mr. Pooky, who used to wait on the dryer by the back door starting about the time I started my two hour drive home every friday like clock work. He always seemed to know when I was coming home even though I worked out of town.
