Tips and tricks for the maintenance and happiness of a pet hamster.
So, you recently required a little furry ball of energy, huh? You may be wondering what you can do to be sure that your pet stays healthy and happy. Hamsters are generally one of the easiest pets to care for, but there are some important things to remember.
You will need a sturdy cage or aquarium to house your little guy. Many places like pet stores and department stores have habitats for hamsters that feature running wheels, water bottle, food dish, places for the hamster to crawl into, and bedding. A standard aquarium works well too, and it is cheaper. If you want to purchase accessories for your pet later, just make sure that the aquarium is big enough for things like a wheel, maze, food dish, and any other play thing that is suitable for your hamster.
Food available for hamsters is usually in bags, and it is a mixture of grains and pellets. There are several different types of hamster food, but they basically they all do the same thing: provide your pet with the nutrients and nourishment that he needs. One thing that is an important supplement to a hamsters normal diet is a salt wheel. Theses are available at any pet store or market. The hamster needs added salt in their diet that they don’t always get in their food.
Bedding for hamsters is an important aspect of pet care. Some good kinds to use are aspen shavings or some that are especially designed for hamsters. Do not use cedar shavings! These are very bad for a hamster’s respiratory system, and can cause death. Also avoid any pine shavings, because this can cause an allergic reaction in some hamsters. Remember that hamsters use their bedding for many things; a place to sleep, somewhere to hide and burrow, a place to go to the bathroom, and a place to hide food. Try to avoid any scented shavings of any kind, and your hamster will certainly thank you for it.
Hamsters are nocturnal, meaning that while most people at night are asleep, a hamsters fun is just beginning. The favorite thing for your hamster to do is to take a ride in its exercise wheel. This is very important for you pet, because it provides much needed exercise, and fun all at the same time. The only downside to their little wheel is that if the hamster happens to be in your room at night, and it is a squeaky/noisy type of wheel, the little guys spinning is most certainly going to keep you awake. They have several now that are much quieter. If the wheel is too noisy, try putting the hamster in another room at night.
Always keep the hamsters food bowl full of food, and his water bottle clean, and full of fresh water. Hamsters are known to pack their cheeks full of food, and then bury it, like they would in the wild. When you clean their cage, you will probably find food under the bedding.
Hamsters usually use a corner of the cage or habitat to go to the bathroom. They try to stay clean, so be sure to change their bedding when you notice an odor coming from it. If a cage is not clean, a hamster can develop wet tail, which is a serious illness.
Although caring for a hamster can seem like a big job, once you get the hang of it, it is easy. Just be sure that your pet has all the things it needs to stay healthy and happy, and you will be watching and playing with your pet for years to come.
