10 Things You Need to Consider Before Bringing a New Pet Home

Before you bring a new pet home, here are some important things to consider.

Animals come is every shape and size. However, not every animal makes a good pet. First off animals should never be bought as a gift. Little chicks on Easter are very cute, but they grow up to become chickens. A chicken might be a good thing if you live on a farm, but in the city, they just don’t work out well.

Your son or daughter might want a puppy, but it might not be the puppy you bring home. There is a lot of things that should be considered before purchasing a new pet such as:

  1. Size: Is it going to grow to large for our family. From dogs, to snakes all baby animals will grow up, you should find out how large it’s going to be as an adult before you bring it home.
  2. Long term cost: Food, vet bills, cages, accessories, medications, etc…can add up quick. Check and see if you can afford the animals needs, including an unexpected visit to the vet.
  3. Allergies: Is anyone in the household allergic to the breed on animal.
  4. Dangers: Is the animal dangerous to family members, or other animals in the home?
  5. Time: Do you have the time that it takes to own this pet? Even dogs can make a mess if they get lonely.
  6. Love it: You need to make sure that every one in the family likes the animal, and promises to do their part in daily care.
  7. Patience: Are you willing to get up at 3am to walk the dog?
  8. Understanding: Can you accept the fact that before long that little cute kitten will be big enough to jump on the kitchen counter, and maybe even steal food that’s left sitting out?
  9. Upkeep: Every living thing goes to the bathroom, that means someone will have to clean it up.
  10. Grooming: How much time is it going to take to groom the pet you want? How often will it need to be done?

As you see there is a lot of thought that needs to go into any new pet you hope to bring home. By not thinking things through our shelters are over crowed with unwanted pets, that at one time was just to cute to resist. If you are thinking about purchasing a new dog or cat, you should check with your local animal service, or ASPCA first. Remember adopting a pet, is saving a life.
