What to Do with Old Clothes

I went through my my wardrobe today to find that I have clothes that I have not worn in ages and clothes that were no longer in fashion. There are also clothes I have worn so often since they are the most comfortable, but are getting worn out. What do you do with such clothes? Do you simply throw them out into the dustbin? I never throw clothes into the bin just like that. Here are some of the things I do with my old clothes, depending on their condition.

1) Donate

I often collect all my old clothes until I have a bagful of them and give them away to charitable organisations. Some of these clothes may be relatively new and usually still in good condition. These organisations need help from the community and would appreciate such gifts.

2) Give Away

I also give away clothes to my friends and relatives who do not mind having hand-me-downs. I gave away a lot of my baby daughter’s clothes to my sister who has a newborn baby. As my daughter grows out of her clothes, I will pass them on as well. After I gave birth, I was about two sizes larger. I had to get new clothes then. But after slimming down, I had to give away those clothes which are too big for me now.

3) Rags

There are some clothes that is worn and literally tattered. I normally wear these clothes at home. I’m mostly clad in T-shirts and shorts when I’m at home. I always find something that is comfortable to wear. These clothes have been worn so often that they are not suitable to be given or donated away. So, I will use them as rags if they are made from absorbent material such as cotton. My hubby also uses some of them to wipe his guitar. Thus, he need no buy special fabric to do so.

4) Vacation

My husband and I do not like use disposable underwear when we are on vacation. They are just not comfortable enough. It’s like wearing paper around your butt. We got around this problem by bringing our old underwear on our vacation and dispose them there. I’m thinking of the same thing for my old clothes. I will leave them behind at the hotel, and the cleaners can pick them up and use them if they like.

5) Garage Sale

Set up a garage sale and sell all your old clothes. You’d be surprised how many people actually don’t mind wearing second-hand clothes. These people scout for great bargains that we offer. Some of these clothes may be branded and I usually let them go for cheap. At the same time, i get a little pocket money from this.

In conclusion, whether you donate, give them away, or find other uses for these old clothes, try as far as possible not to just dump them in the bin. There are many useful things you can do with them, for our own benefit or for others.

  1. Neat little article. We usually wait till we have a fairly big bag then donate them to the local charity so others who are less fortunate might be lucky enough to get something half way decent and warm. Thanks for sharing your tips everyone should be practicing this.

  2. Good ideas and article – nice work!

    Blessings.
