What to Do While Waiting for Your Laundry

A necessary task that provides idle time. Some suggestions on making the best use of that time or not.

Depending on the circumstances it can be a painful exercise or it can be relatively easy and provide you with the opportunity to perform other tasks at the same time.

First of all it will depend on the environment in which you have to do your laundry.  Are you at home? Or are you out at a Laundromat?

If you have laundry facilities within your own home, you have the best situation.  You are able to choose between wasting your time and using your time productively.

I know a lot of people in that situation who take advantage of the time they have waiting for the ‘load’ to be done by doing other housework.  You can also use that time by sending e-mails or writing stories that you have been meaning to get to, but you never seemed to have the time.  You can also select activities that may border on wasting time, but are still enjoyable and fun.  Watching TV can be not only entertaining, but depending on what’s on it can be educational and informative as well.

Now, on the other hand doing laundry in a Laundromat outside your home, narrows the possibilities somewhat.  On the productive side, you could balance your checkbook. Do people still do that?  You could also knit if you were so inclined.  I know my knitting days were confined to rainy days when I was about eight years old.  I could see the results, but never could figure out what it was that I had created.

Reading a book would be a popular recreational activity that depending on one’s point of view may or may not be wasting one’s time.  Making a shopping list is a good idea, because quite possibly that would be your next stop.

Of course if you wanted to really drive yourself batty, you could watch the clothes go around and around in the machine.  I might suggest a stop off at the eye doctor on the way home from the Laundromat if that is your choice.

Well, as for what I would choose?  I usually lean toward the productive.  I think writing that story would be high on my priorities.

What was that I heard?  Aaww yes!

My clothes are dry.  I have to run!

  1. I have used the laundromat and I find it a good place to read a book, write letters or chat with friends. Best wishes, Ruby

  2. I used the laundromat in college and it was a good place to also study because people leave you alone there.

  3. Interesting write. Lots of options given by you. Sometimes I do the productive things ,like sleeping, while the laudry is being done.

  4. Exactly! The most productive thing under certain circumstances just might be to … sleep. Sleep can be good.
