Spring Clean Your Closet

The best time to clean out the closet(s) is on a rainy day.  Your mood is much more frivolous and you will toss out more items when you are in this type of mood.

First of all, go through your clothing. If you did not wear it this season, it needs a new home. Get three boxes and place them in front of the closet. Mark one “throw away”, another “give away” and another “maybe.”

For those items that are faded, torn, or just worn out, place in the throw away box. If they are still in fair condition, put them in the give away box. If you are not sure, put the item in the maybe box. Sort through your clothes. If you have 32 blouses, you might want to go through them and see which you can part with. Some may not be the proper size and you might have 10 red blouses. Discard those that you do not wear very often.

Slacks should be throroughly looked over. From wear and tear, some become shiny. These should be put in one of your boxes.

Organize – put all of the long sleeve blouses together. Put t-shirts and casual wear together. Put dressy blouses together. It makes it much easier to discard or keep when they are grouped together.

Put slacks together – dress slacks, jeans, and casual wear should be grouped together.

Shoes should be lined up either on the floor of the closet, or  kept in their original boxes, marked clearly what they contain. Keep sandles, flats, and dressy shoes together. If the shoe is worn out on the bottom and you don’t want to invest in new heels and soles, then they should be put in one of your boxes.

Purses should be kept together according to color. If you find you have not used a handbag for a season, that might be the sign to put it in one of your boxes.

After a thorough pass thru of the closet, look into the boxes. If the items in the give away box are not suitable for others to wear, they need to be put in the throw away box. In the maybe box are the things that you should consider taking to a resale shop and getting some cash for them.

Be sure and remove the boxes from your sight, before you change your mind. If you are going to throw away items, put them in a large trash bag and throw them away. If you are going to take the give away box to some charitable organization, put it in your car trunk.

The maybe box items can be put in the car trunk, also, for the trip to the resale store.

With the closet being organized and cleaned out, you now can pour yourself that much needed cup of coffee and tea, and consider this a job well done.
