How to Organize Your Closet Correctly for the Neat Freak

These are simple steps to take to ensure that your closet is as organized as possible.

Everyday you feed your closet more and more clutter. A new shirt, scarf, jacket or pair of shoes until the monstrous mass of items overwhelms you and your precious space. Not to mention you can’t even open the closet doors without an avalanche of junk toppling over you. How about when you are running late and want to find a specific article of clothing that will compliment your outfit perfectly? Not a chance! Things seem to get lost or completely vanish because your closet has a mind of its own. To avoid this problem follow these simple steps to getting yourself and your closet organized so you can actually find clothing in there.

Step 1: Remove everything from the closet

Sure, this seems time consuming, exhausting and boring but think of it as a journey into the unknown. You never know what goodies you have lying around in the darkness until you look. By removing all contents from your closet you will be able to see exactly how much space you have to work with and you will be able to organize and discard all the unnecessary junk that is taking up needed space. When you closet is completely empty give it a good scrub with soap and water.

Step 2: Separate and divide items you removed

Many people hate this step because it means having to throw away stuff you owned since you were 5 years old. To make this separation easier divide items into two bins; the keep and no keep bin and discard everything in the no keep bin. If possible donate old items to Goodwill and you might get a tax break.

Step 3: Divide remaining items

Divide clothing into 4 categories

  • The in season category
  • The type category
  • The use category
  • The “What the heck is this category”?

The Season Category

Clothing that falls under summer, spring, fall, and winter should all be sorted together if they are worn in that season. Obviously you summer stuff includes tanks, shorts, and swimsuits while your winter stuff is heavy jackets and pants.

The Type Category

This is all clothing that is worn for special occasions. Add another pile for casual stuff that only your dog should see you in.

The Use Category

Take a look at your clothing and determine how often you wear each garment.

This is going to seem stupid but it really does work. Now take your 3 neat piles of clothing and divide them according to frequent and non-frequently worn.

What the heck is this category?

So now that you have followed all these steps you are left with a pile

of odds and ends that don’t belong to any specific category. So what do you do? Not to worry. These items are probably accessories such as shoes, belts and scarves. Divide these items up by what part of the body they are worn on. This is also a great opportunity to clear out some clutter.

Step 4: Use Closet Organizers

After all that hard work the result is a neat, organized and clean closet.

To prevent a mess creeping up on you again invest in some closet organizers.

  • Shelves provide more space for you to store items instead of on the floor. The best ones are sturdy wood because they are more durable and can hold much more stuff.
  • Special Cloths Hanger’s that are collapsible and multi-tiered allow you to hang several garments on one hanger to save you space
  • A sturdy shoe rack is a good investment

Finally the finished product is a neat and very well organized closet. Awesome!
