Ways to clean and organize a bedroom closet, including step by step directions and helpful suggestions.
Many of us have bedroom closets that are a little on the messy side. Or maybe you’re like me and your closet looks like it exploded all over the room. Cleaning and organizing a bedroom closet can be a daunting task. Even overwhelming in some cases. You may not know where to start or what to do with the contents of the closet. But with a few easy steps you can have an organized, easy access closet.
First Step: Sorting out the contents of your closet.
Many of us are pack rats, myself included, We often keep items of clothing that do not fit, are out of style, are waiting to be fixed or items that we simply just don’t like. The first thing to do is sort out your clothing and accessories and see what needs to go and what needs to stay.
A simple way of doing this is to create three piles. These piles can be made in plastic bins, boxes or even in piles on the floor in separate areas of the room. Label one box as keep, one box as give away, and one box as throw away. With the option of placing your apparel in only three piles, the sorting process has already become easier.
Make sure you have plenty of time to go through your closet and are willing to try on clothing. Items that you keep should fit, be worn frequently and be in good condition. Consider giving away items that do not fit, you do not like, or you do not wear anymore. Throw away items should be any item that is not in wearable condition, or simply cannot be worn anymore. Follow these same steps for shoes and accessories.
Step Two: Determine what goes back into the closet.
Now that you have a box of clothing and accessories that you would like to keep decide what goes back into the closet. If you have a dresser and find yourself with a lot of t-shirts you may want to consider placing these items in there freeing up valuable closet space. Anything that is not clothing or an accessory should be moved to a more appropriate space.
Once you have determined what is staying in the closet begin organizing the items. Sort winter clothes with other cold weather apparel and shoes. Likewise group warm weather items and shoes together. If something can be worn during multiple seasons organize it by designating a space in the closet for these items.
Step Three: Putting it all together.
Make sure your closet is empty before you start this step. Start with the clothes you wear the most often that are in season right now. For example, if you are cleaning your closet during the summer months, start with what you wear most during this season. Find a space where you can easily locate the apparel and can access it easily. You may group and hang them by color, type of clothing or by how much use they get.
Now consider taking your out of season clothes and storing them elsewhere. Plastic under bed bins are a good solution and hold a fair amount of clothing. When the seasons change swap the clothes under the bed for the clothes in the closet. Your closet will stay much cleaner and more organized if you go by the seasonal organizing method.
As for accessories you must group like items alike. Belts go together and can be hung by installing cup hooks into the wall. Purses may be organized with an over the door purse organizer or if you have a lot of purses you may want to store the ones you use less often in a plastic container and keep it on the floor of your closet for easy access. Shoes can be grouped by style and occasion. For shoes you do not wear that much it often works to leave them in their boxes, label them and stack them on the closet shelf. Shoes you wear often can be lined up neatly on the floor or placed in a shoe holder. Scarves and other delicate items should be stored in baskets or wooden boxes which you can easily store on shelves.
Tips:
To keep clothes with delicate straps on the hanger use a rubber band to secure the straps by wrapping it over the strap and the hanger.
If you have room in your closet you may consider placing a small dresser inside. There you can keep socks and delicate items (lingerie etc.) and you will not have to hunt for them when needed.
Closets that have extra shelf space can be used to store more clothing. If you have a lot of summer tank tops or lots of jeans, consider stacking these on the shelves. Make sure you can see the items and are able to reach them easily.
