Five Steps to Becoming More Organized

Tips to help people become more organized in their home or office.

Over the past nine years I have become a really unorganized person. If you were to ask me for a pair of scissors, I would have to tare apart my office to find them. It not just little thing I can’t find its bills, important tax documents. Most of the times I don’t want to deal with stuff like mail so I set it on my desk and close the door. This has caused chaos in my office and in my life. I am now a firm believer that a disorganized home leads to a disorganized life. So I have been on an organizing kick for some time. And I have found certain thing really help me in the process. My top five steps to becoming more organized are as followed.

  1. Make a plan, set aside time. The process of organizing is not a fast one, you have to be patient and make time.
  2. Sort. Designate a box or bin for items you are keeping, throwing away and donating. Once you have sorted everything into these three categories. You can start to sort your keep pile into different categories, for example papers to be filed, pictures, books, projects and movies. The categories will depend on your items.
  3. Once this is done move all the bins to another room. This will allow you to view the space, and figure out where everything will go. You may need to install shelves for books or movies. But try to work with what’s already there. One thing you can do is outfit an extra closet with shelving so that everything can be stored out of sight. For bills and paperwork I suggest using a bill sorted that is number. This will allow you to see all your bills. For papers and project I keep a paper sorter on my desk with labeled trays.
  4. Assign everything a home. Nothing should just be set somewhere for now. In order to keep the space organized everything needs a permanent home. Put your items where you have assigned them.
  5. Enjoy your new space, and remember that everything needs a home, that goes for new items that you bring into the space.
