Decluttering Your Basement

Everytime the year ends, decluttering and organizing our home is a good activity to clear some space for unnecessary things.  There is no other place like the basement deserves a tidy look. A basement is often described as dark and disorganized full of old stuff and dust.   An organized one can keep our old things in good place and for an easy retrieval when needed.  A periodic schedule can also be done throughout the year.

Here are some basic ideas to beat your basement mess:

Focus on one area at a time and not to mix up with things that do not belong to that area. 

Maximize space and put things in areas according to use.  Utilize the wall by putting hooks and hanging shelves.  Items used often should be within reach while rarely used items such as Christmas décor should be placed in high section of the cabinet.

Use containers or boxes to place things properly. Sort items according to type and allocate each container or box for uniformity and better organization.  Have different boxes or cabinets for each kid so as not to mix their things and they will be happy to see if all their things are just in one place for easy retrieval.

The importance of labeling.  It is one of the most important task for easy reference.  Have them in big bold letters and better if  computerized to be more visible.

Dispose out dated items.  Basement are actually full of memories where you are like in a journey  back to your childhood, high-school days, remember the special gifts and letters you received, old photos, toys, board games, out dated electronic items, and other things that you have not used for years.  Maybe it is time to dispose them by giving them to charity or sell.    

If one day is not enough in organizing the whole basement, set another schedule and stick with it.  If this is not followed, things will pile up again in due time.  

It is good to look forward if things in the past are manage well.
