Waste Not, Want Not

Do you find yourself throwing away tons of food at the end of the day? With the current economic climate, the last thing we need to be doing is wasting food and in turn our money. Follow these useful tips and you will cut down the amount of food you throw away.
Salad
Don’t dress a salad, you can avoid unnecessary waste if you serve it ‘dry’. Put the dressing on the side and people can use as much or as little as they want. When storing leftover salad, keep ‘wet’ items like cucumber and tomatoes in a separate container. The lettuce will still be edible the next day.

Bread
Don’t use your old bread to feed the birds! Use any leftovers to make croutons or pop it into a blender to make breadcrumbs and then freeze. Use the crumbs in stuffing or to thicken soups, stews and sauces.
Vegetables
Most vegetables can go into a soup. Add left over meat, pasta or potatoes and you have got yourself a tasty meal.

Rice
Make sure rice is cooled quickly before chilling, then stir fry with egg, peas and ham.
Mashed potato
Chill or freeze and then use to make bubble and squeak or mix with herbs and salmon or tuna for quick and easy fishcakes.

Over Ripe Fruit
Think purees. Most excess fruits can be turned into homemade ice cream or sorbet, or there’s always the option of using them up in homemade jams.

Now all my family orginate from Yorkshire (UK) and we are well known for not wasting a thing – so I loved this.
Can I add – for the bread. Stale break makes a great bread and butter pudding – a real favourite here. Also when you have sliced a good loaf or baguette and some of the slices remain uneaten. I always have a bag in the freezer and I simply slip these in. Every so often I grab a handful for grilling with cheese or whatever – saves cutting into new fresh bread.
Over ripe bananas – banana bread – again a favourite.

Nice article – a great way to save rice is to freeze it – when you re-heat it the frozen quality keeps the rice moist when it is re-heated!
Blessings.
Sincerely,
