Stretching Your Dollar

How people can save by knowing where to shop for good deals.

How to stretch your dollar to increase your purchasing power has become an art. More and more people see that one of the main ways to see themselves through financial difficulties is to be able to control their spending especially if their earning power is low. Such is the case for the freelance teacher and others having occasional employment when they have to pay back a loan at the same time or not. It means that if you are going to be spending money on groceries it is better to by bulk in the long run and avoid small packages.

It is easy to do for some products like sugar, which is conveniently sold in sachets and cubes but costs more than a 2 kg bag. Likewise, if someone wants fresh fruit and vegetables markets would have a fresh choice and a larger likelihood that you can buy by bulk then supermarkets. You also have a chance of speaking directly with the dealer and bargain your way through a purchase. Surprisingly I have found that certain condiments and ready made soups can be found at good prices in China town probably because the Chinese have pretty well understood how to market the ready made noodle that can be served with a soup.

When it comes to buying clothes, if one is not fashion conscious then fripperies or second hand stores that collect clothes, which have been used, are a good idea. But then again one has to use their better judgment because some places charge more than others and some clothes are too worn to warrant a purchase. Sometimes large shoe store chains will have a liquidation center where shoes will be reduced to half price and that is probably because a shoe line has been discontinued. This would be a better deal then buying a pair of shoes at a 20 percent discount.

Today films can be purchased at discounts through promotions but better deals can be had if one tries to get older films that are no longer as popular but are still good viewing and sometimes better than the new variety. Such is the case at film rental places that also sell less popular films especially if they are in video format. Obviously one has to have a video player to benefit from this purchase.

People should also use their judgment when buying books by looking through second hand bookstalls or joining a library. Today hardcover process have become so inflated it could the average book buyer self-conscious about buying new texts. But there is nothing wrong when reading a used book just as there is nothing wrong in wearing a used article of clothing that is in good shape. It starts to be wrong if you think about it negatively. The advantage with the book selection is that the reader may have the occasion of coming across titles that they have not had a chance to read when they were younger.
