Lower Your Electricity Bill While You Sleep

Easy ways to lower your electricity bill with very little effort.
You may or may not already be monitoring your electricity usage due to ever rising bills. Whether you are or not, consider what you leave on standby for no reason while you’re sleeping. Did you know that many appliances still take as much electricity when they’re off as when they’re on? This is due to the type of power system that they use.
Simply switching off appliances at the socket before you go to bed will have a noticeable impact on your bill.
Ask your electricity provider if they have a usage monitor too. Many companies are now giving these away. Use one and it will truly wake you up to the electricity and money you waste in your home every single night.
Switch things off as part of your locking up routine. It doesn’t take long for the habit to kick in.
Chances are that most modern homes have one or more of the following left on over night. SWITCH THEM OFF AT THE SOCKET:
- TVs
- DVD/video players
- Satellite/cable boxes
- Computers/printers/scanners/speakers
- Radios
- Ovens
- Microwave ovens
Moving on to daytime, there are many things that could be left off, right through until early evening. Apply the same rule. There really is no point leaving anything on when you’re not using it? Is there?

Useful article.

Don’t you mean to unplug these things instead of turning them off. When things are plugged in like TV’s or your dvd player, they drain a little bit of electricity while they are plugged in.

Storm Jackson, you are correct! Computers, Scanners, and all sorts of stuff around your house drain energy even if they are off! Any appliances with Inverter Boxes use up the same amount of energy OFF or ON! So I would recommend buying a Switch Box and set it under your table; easy UNPLUG! (Switch Boxes dont use energy, they just distribute it
) Thanks for sharing!

How many loss do these make per month?
Aldrin A Wilding West | Oct 28, 2009 | Reply
In answer to Dark Antirex’s question above, since doing this, and turning off unnecessary lights alone, I have reduced my electricity bill by an average of 28% per month. Since following other reduction measures, like boiling kettles less, or with only enough water for the amount required, and lowering heating temp by one degree, etc. etc., I expect my next bill to be around 40% less in total.

I do these tips too. You are correct there.

Storm and Thunder above. In answer to your comment, that’s why I mentioned in the very first paragraph to switch things off at the socket.

That is not plain enough though, so I’ll submit a fix. By the time you read this comment, the text will plainly state turn them off and switch them off at the socket.
