- Don’t buy junk food. You’ll be healthier and you can really save money. Leave chips, chocolates, candies, and soda pop for a special occasion such as birthdays.
- Don’t eat out, except on very special occasions. Even famous fast-food places cost more than a home-cooked meal.
- Like potatoes? Mashing them makes them go a great deal further
- Cook double quantities so you can save time and electricity. A double quantity of anything takes less cooking time than two single quantities.
- Use tap-hot water when boiling vegetables to reduce cooking time
- Use a microwave or double steamer to save electricity – hence money. Where possible, cook two or more vegetables (e.g. potatoes, pumpkin and carrots) in the same pot.
- When roasting meat, use a baking dish with a lid. This keeps the heat in, thus giving you a quicker cook time. Add vegetables to the roasting meat and try to cook your desert in the oven at the same time.
- Have lots of salads to save time and money in cooking
- Use less laundry detergent than the packet recommends
- Use cold water and the fast cycle wherever possible. This will save heating and running costs.
