Frugal Living 101: Improve Your Shopping Habits

Have you been spending a lot of money on shopping? It’s time to change your shopping habits. These frugal living tips will help you get started.

Whether or not we like to admit it, greed is a natural part of human psychology.  We are motivated by positive visuals or things that serve as eye candy.  And, because we will always have the need to consume, we tend to use up all the resources available.  This is not a problem as long as our resources exceed our consumption capacity.  But when we’re living on a tight budget, we should learn to buy only the things that we need or simply make do with what we have.  Besides, you never know when unexpected expenses may arise, so it’s always good to set aside some money.

What’s quite surprising is that the more money we have, the more things we seem to need.  We don’t have to ask the geeks for a scientific explanation at this point.  The more doable and sustainable option is to modify our shopping behavior and shorten our shopping list.

Are you ready to challenge the impulsive buyer in you?  Here are three tips to help you get started:

1. Schedule your shopping days

Avoid synchronizing your retail therapy schedule with your payday schedule; otherwise, you’ll often end up with empty pockets.  Shop when there’s a huge store sale (e.g. seasonal sale, clearance sale) so you can get better product deals and big discounts.

2. Thrive on comparison shopping

Grabbing whatever tempts us off the shelf is not the smart way to shop.  If you find something that you really like, take note of its price and check for similar items in other stores.  You just might find the same item at a store that sells it at a cheaper price.  If that item is something that will make a dent on your wallet, sleep on it.  Spend a few days weighing the pros and cons of buying that item.  Do you really need it?  Is it worth buying?  Will you be able to make good use of it?  Can you live without it?

3.  Make a conscientious shopping list

A shopping list is a valuable money-saving tool.  You simply have to depend on it while shopping.  Make your grocery list the night before you go to the supermarket.  This way, you’ll have another chance to study the list again in the morning, before leaving the house.  You may forget to jot down an important item or two, but the important thing is you bring with you a conscientious guide that tells you what to buy first.

If you do these things consistently, you’ll soon notice a change in your shopping habits. Later on, you’ll see positive effects on your overall spending behavior.
