How to start with a single dollar bill and turn it into a million dollars.

Lets take a look at the math here. I will not be using Dollar signs.

1. 1×2=2

2 2×2=4

3 4×2=8

4 8×2=16

5 16×2=32

6 32×2=64

7 64×2=128

8 128×2=256

9 256×2=512

10 512×2=1024

11 1024×2=2048

12 2048×2=4096

13 4096×2=8192

14 8192×2=16384

15 16384×2=32768

16 32768×2=65536

17 65536×2=131072

18 131072×2=262144

19 262144×2=524288

20 424288×2=1048576

  2. What you wrote is clearly very interesting. However, I believe that 424288 × 2 = 848576 not 1048576

  3. Darietto, there’s a typo in the carryover. Should be $524288.

    Another interesting aspect of this is that if you give up 1/3 of the gain each time . . . that is, 1+0.67 = 1.67 and then 1.67+1.11 = 2.68, etc, etc . . . you only wind up with $27,405.82 at the end.

    That shows the impact of paying 33% in taxes each time it doubles. You’d think if you’re paying 33% each time you’d wind up with 2/3 of a million in the end . . . but it’s only 2.7% of what you’d have if you didn’t pay any taxes. The lesson: Invest through a Roth or some other tax-free compounding method.
