Avoiding Common Tax Blunders

April 15th is only a few days away. The IRS offers advice to avoid common preparation pitfalls.
With the April 15th tax deadline looming, the rush for procrastinating tax filers begins. During this frenzied time the IRS warns taxpayers to exercise caution and avoid some common errors.
Spelling – The incorrect spelling of a dependents name can delay processing of your return.
Incorrect social security number – Tax experts encourage filers to write the social security number of a dependent directly from the card to insure accuracy.
Check Your Math – Check and double check your math to insure you’re not paying more than your should or getting back less then you deserve.
Sign On the Line – Oddly, this easily avoided mishap occurs too frequently. The IRS warns an unsigned return renders your tax form invalid and will be returned to you for correction. (Also, don’t forget to sign your check if you owe this year.)
The IRS advises taxpayers to take their time if doing their own return. Not surprising, most errors are due to filers waiting until the eleventh hour to get started. Errors on tax returns can cause needless delays in processing and sending your refund. If the thought of doing your taxes seems daunting, consider hiring a professional preparation service or using tax preparation software. The IRS offers the Free File program, which provides free federal income tax preparation and electronic filing for eligible taxpayers. The software asks simple questions which auto-fills the forms and does the math for you. Specific guidelines apply for eligibility, for more information go to IRS.
