Debt settlement is becoming popular as an alternative to bankruptcy. The internet is full with the searches, which in turn is quite baffling. How can one decide on a custom-made program is another question which arises amidst all this confusion.
Are debt settlement companies safe for you?
Are debt settlement companies safe to work with?
If yes, how to go for the right debt settlement firm?
These are the questions that always haunt me before I think of going for a professional help in solving my debt problems.
Debt settlement programs have become more popular these days as a good alternative to bankruptcy. When I go and search on web for a good debt settlement company, I see many advertisements with all claiming that they are the best, and that confuses me even more.
Everyone wants a reliable and ethical debt settlement firm to deal with one’s debts? But there is always a ‘BUT’ how can one trust them?
I think asking these questions to one self can help a bit:
Do they judge what option is best for me?
Most of the debt companies will try to convince me for signing up for one of the debt solution plan, on which they are good. They won’t consider my financial status and situation before giving me one of the best option (what they think).
Do they make accurate disclosure about their operation?
Lots of companies can claim to help me to get me out of debt but most of them are not law firms. It is always good to take help from a law firm as they will have better negotiating power with creditor. Hence I will go for a debt settlement law firm.
I will always try to find out the firms that collects majority of their fees after they deliver savings to me and show me results, rather than those companies who charges a huge sum initially before delivering any results.
Are they certified with Better Business Bureau (BBB)?
One of the important ways to know that a debt settlement firm is ethical and reliable is to check the actual BBB record of that firm to find out how many complaints are filed against that company. I saw many companies with large number of complaints filed against them. I will go for that debt settlement company, which has a good BBB rating.
What do customers actually say about the companies?
In today’s world word of mouth matters most. Any one can beat their own trumpets but I will believe when other says good about someone. Hence, I will see which company has good testimonials from their clients. Client will say good, about a debt settlement company, when they will get good service. I will therefore definitely check what clients are writing in their testimonials.
So just like me, choose the best debt settlement company for yourself.
