Energy saving ideas to keep your electric bill down and still be warm.
I come from south Florida and i moved into a very old house in North Florida that is well very cold somedays.
These are some ideas i have personally used to keep me and my family warm and have saved me alot of money on my electric bill.
1. Check for drafts on doors and put in weather stripping available at most hardware stores.
2. Put up plastic on the inside or outside of the windows or both to stop any drafts especially if you have old windows with little to no insulation. I do this and i use popsicle strips and a staple gun for easy removal when the weather gets warmer.
3. Buy electric blankets use in your bed when you sleep turn off during the day. buy some other ones for the couches and chairs, I used snug straps on the couches and chairs to keep them from sliding off. This has made my living-room so comfortable even when we turn the thermostat way down. It has been so nice to sit in a chair or couch and its so warm. My kids have never been so happy when I have cranked the temperature down.
4. Look for cracks and use expanding foam to fill them in. Look around your house and if you see a little crack fill it in, you would be surprised how much heat you can lose from a small crack in the wall.
5. Shut off vents to rooms you do not use. i put plastic on the doors so that no cold air escapes it pushes more warm air into the rooms you do use.
6. Eat and drink warm food I know so simple right but also eat breakfast if your body has food it produces more heat when your cold.
7. Layer clothing, long johns should be skin tight that keeps your body temperature up also wear a HAT we lose the most heat from our heads.
8. Electrical outlets lose alot of heat you can buy insulation at hardware store for really cheap to put inside the outlet.
9. Open curtains on the north side of the house when the sun is shinning to help warm up the house and close them at night. Also cover your attic access its usually not insulated at all.
10. If you have a fireplace close the floe when your not using it if you cant close it you can get a trash bag filled with newspaper but PLEASE remember to take it out before you start your fire!!
