Simple Ways to Save Money on Your Grocery Bill

Don’t over spend on groceries. Here’s a few tips to avoid it.

The most difficult of household tasks to keep under control is the amount of money we spend on groceries. Even with a small family, individual tastes and food fads can sky rocket your food bill more than your monthly rent, house payment, or car payment. Thinking ahead before you make that weekly trip to the grocery store can save you a bundle in the long run.

Firstly, it pays to plan your household food menus in advance. Also shop on a day when stores are less crowded. It is also important to pick the right time of day. Early in the morning is always best. Take in consideration of your family’s various needs, and avoid buying too much. Only buy what you need, no more than you can store to avoid unwanted leftovers that will more than likely will get thrown out.

Buy larger packages whenever possible, like cereal, that everyone in your family will be sure to consume. When you see a sale item that is not something you usually buy, compare how much of a saving you receive as compared to the original price. Think to yourself, “Is this a good deal?” The regular item you usually buy may be a better deal. It may be 50 cents cheaper than your regular item, but check the quality and quantity of the item. If your family doesn’t like the taste of the food item, spaghetti sauce being an example, it will not get eaten, and that is even more money out the window.

Take the time to read labels. A can of soup may be on sale, but what is the quality of the item. If it’s chicken noodle soup, approximately how much chicken and how much noddles are in that soup. Also check for the nutritional value. Is it healthy? It also pays to bring a calculator and small notepad to keep a running tally of the cost, especially if you are on a strict budget. It can be very embarrassing to reach the counter and realize you don’t have enough money.

Study the sales ads. See what’s on sale and where. A store may have a good sale on an item you would normally buy, but if that store is across town you may have to spend more money on gas. Also, be willing to shop at more than one store, especially if they are located in close proximity. I often shop at the regular grocery store in town to buy meat, cheeses and can goods, but find it better to swing over to the market for fruits and vegetables.

Never shop when you’re hungry. Have something to eat before you go shopping. In most cases you’re more likely to buy unneeded items if your stomach is doing the thinking. Use coupons whenever possible, but only on items you regularly buy.

And lastly, always check your receipt. Cashiers do sometimes make mistakes and may accidentally over charge you.

  26. Great information. I would like to add one thing. When you match up good coupons with good sales it is very possible to get stuff for free, or even make a profit. In these cases you should take advantage and stock up.

  27. Great article. Sometimes it is hard to take the time to plan ahead and find coupons and deals but it really is worth it. All you have to do is look at your grocery bill or your dwindling bank account to regret overspending on food. It is depressing to spend too much on food because you just eat it, and it goes away. It’s not like spending on a house, where you get to see it and live in it everyday. I’ve definitely been in a rush before and made dumb mistakes that have cost me money. For example, we have a store that makes you pay for your own grocery bags. This is to encourage people to bring tote
    > bags
or reuse their millions of extra grocery bags from other stores. It’s a great concept but if I’m in a rush and leave the house without bags, I just added the cost of buying then at the register to my grocery bill. Another bad habit I always have is going to the store when I’m hungry. You mentioned this and it’s a great point. I definitely overspend when I want to buy everything that looks good.

  28. I always have my shopping list before going to any grocery. It is a good practice for me to buy what i really needs. Sales can lead us to buy things that is useless!
