How to Divide Chores

Tired of bickering with your partner about chores? Unequal chore division can build resentment. These steps will help you divide chores and argue less.
- Write down a list of all chores large and small.
- Next to each chore, write down how long it takes to complete each one.
- Then each partner should initial the chores they are responsible for. If it is a shared chore, mark it as shared.
- After you have tallied the results, see if there are areas that can be more evenly distributed.
- It’s a good idea to repeat this exercise every year or before problems arise.
Instead of listing how long a chore takes, you can rate the difficulty on a scale 1-5. This can work for those chores you just hate to do.
The chore list is also a helpful negotiation tool to refer back to. You might consider swapping chores, taking on extra chores as a gift or exchanging chores for favors.
