Uses for Baking Soda

Baking soda is great for many, many different uses all around your home. For around $1 a box (16 ounces) how can you beat that? It doesn’t just clean items well, but deodorizes them as well. Here are some simple ways to use baking soda around your home.

- CLEANING -

Freshen carpets and rugs – Sprinkle some baking soda onto your carpets and rugs, allow it to sit for at least 15 minutes. Then vacuum as you normally do. For bad odors allow the baking soda to sit overnight and vacuum up in the morning.

Shine your floor – If your floor is looking dull, dissolve about half a cup of baking soda into a bucket of warm water. Then mop your floor and rinse, you will see a nice shiny floor when finished.

Removed baked on junk – If you have pots and pans with built up grease and junk on them sprinkle a good amount to fully cover the area with baking soda. Place in the sink with hot soapy water and allow to sit or about 20 minutes. Then wash as you normally do and the residue should wash off easily. It may require doing this twice for heavily soiled pots and pans.

Deodorize drains – If your drains are a bit on the smelly side you can easily deodorize them using baking soda. Pour half a cup of baking soda down the drain, then half a cup of white vinegar, allow it to sit for 15 minutes. Now pour some boiling water down the drain. It will clean and deodorize easily without hard work.

Shine Silver – Combine three parts of baking soda with one part of water to form a past like substance. Rub it onto your tarnished silver using a clean cloth. Then rinse it clean and dry, it will be nice and tarnish free.

All purpose cleaner – To make a simple and cheap all purpose cleaner, mix together 1/4 cup of baking soda to 1 tablespoon liquid detergent and just a splash of vinegar to form a paste. Then use it to clean areas around your home, just rinse or wipe the area clean after scrubbing and it will be nice and clean.

-  BEAUTY  -

Deodorant – Just use a soft cloth to place some under your arm as a deodorant. It works great at preventing sweat and odors.

Face exfoliate – Make a mix of three parts baking soda to one part water, gently scrub all over your face and rinse clean. Leaves skin clean and smooth.

Remove build-up from your hair – We all have build-up left in our hair from hair products and the environment, so to simply remove the build-up add one teaspoon baking soda into your shampoo. Wash as normal and rinse well.

  1. Good uses for soda, I use it all the time for cleaning counters, pots and pans and just about everything else. You can also put it in laundry water to brighten your clothing.
