The Basic Knowhow on Deck Steps
As the name suggests, deck steps are the steps that lead up to a deck area or floor in a house. The deck is a very important part of a house as it is generally the most “happening” venue during a party or a barbeque or any other domestic gathering. What it basically means is that the deck area needs special attention to make it look good, and the same goes for deck steps. Building and step deck is not that hard, and repairing one is even easier. One does not need to be an expert in home decor as long as the gift of an aesthetic sense is present along with the necessary tools and instruments.
While building deck steps, one can start by constructing small boards or wooden platforms which are joisted in the 2-by-8 or 2-by-6 inch measurements. These measurements result in 5-7 inch deep steps which are ideal size for deck steps. Usually people are content with two or three deck steps but if the requirement is more, then stringers can be used to build the extra steps.
Often it has been seen, especially in areas where the weather is very damp, that deck steps turn slippery over time and the deck itself becomes a hazardous area for everyone including kids and elders. Fixing this problem is very simple. All one needs to do is go to the nearest hardware store, pick a set of self adhesive non-skid strips and then stick them on the step deck surface. Hugely increasing the traction these strips ensure that the friction between the steps and anything that comes in contact with them is really high.
While choosing the style of deck steps one can opt for either the kind where the treads (where we step on) are inside the stringers and are tightly fixed with metallic cleats, or one can go for the second kind where the stringers are cut through like a jaw line where the treads are fixed. The second kind does not necessarily require any metal. Since most hardware or home decor shops sell pre-hacked stringers, the only question that remains is – are your treads the right size for the stringer gaps? If not, then they can be sawed off until they are aligned.
We already discussed that fixing deck steps is an easy process. All a person needs to know is where to get hold of the accessories that speed up the fixing process. Local hardware stores always sell the non-skid strips and all other similar equipments. However, if one is looking for a lot of options and variety, shopping online is the best option. You never know when you come across a deal that is mouth watering to say the least and save a whole lot of money. Most big cities have a Home Depot store as well, which is as good as online shopping considering the range of equipments they house when it comes to home improvement activities like designing or fixing deck steps.
