Stay Green on the Cheap

Many of us would love to go green. Sadly for most it can be expensive and time consuming. So I have compiled some simple and cheap ways to get started on that green brick road.

Low flow toilets

You have probable thought of using a low flow toilet at least once. The problem is they are expensive and very annoying when they don’t work. So how about a five dollar solution? It is pretty simple really, go to the dollar store, and buy some large plastic bath toys or something like it. Then put them in the tank. If you ever have a problem (say after chilly Tuesday) you can take them out and flush all you want!

Biking

Try biking to work/school or if you are close enough you can just walk. I walk about 4 km from school and back each day. So how hard is it walk to your job? If walking isn’t an option you could bike! Besides being green walking/biking is a great way to stay in shape!

Don’t sell your old car

Don’t sell your old car, because as much as buying a hybrid would be cool it is a bad idea. The ecological footprint from buying a new car out weighs your old car by a lot! But if you need to buy a new car then shop smart. Don’t get a truck unless you need it! If you want to compensate by buying a truck that’s not a good idea. Most people when they see or hear a flashy car or truck they think “he is compensating!” Just a little news flash.

Florescent light bulbs

In my opinion I think all incandescent light bulbs should be banned by law. We don’t need them because we have florescent light bulbs! They last for life and they are really bright. If you have ever had a problem with fluorescents that might have happened because you got the cheap ones. Buy the expensive globe ones because I can assure you that it is much cheaper in the long run.

Don’t throw away your old electronics

When your computer has bit the dust don’t throw it out! You can always give it to a refurbishing company some are even free or they will pay you! If you have to throw out your old electronics make sure you send it to the proper facilities. Computers have a lot of gold, lead and mercury in them so make sure you dispose of it properly.
