My Best Friend: Charity

This is a story about my friend Charity. She always has time to talk and she really listens. She is there when I feel defeated and full of despair. Sometimes we sit together without a word between us. Her all knowing eyes let me know that she understands and she cares. At this writing she is just 13, but that is kind of old for a cat.

I was admitted to the hospital for dehydration. I am diabetic. Toward the evening in my room in the hospital, I glanced toward the television. Suddenly I saw Jerry Seinfeld step out the front of the TV set! We talked for a few moments then just as the evening news was going off he said he had to go. He stepped back into the set. Then “Seinfeld” was coming on.  The hallucinations continued when I got home.

It seemed to me that people were coming to visit, sometimes even bringing already cooked food. It would be placed in the kitchen then later when I would go to look, all the food was gone. I began to presume that Ashley was eating it all. I mentioned this to several people, some were real!  I don’t remember which.

About that time Ashley discovered we had leeches in our drinking water. She had seen them first in the aquarium. We were not doing well at that time. Ashley poured a bunch of salt in our grapefruit juice. Maybe I should have figured it out because about that time I was craving pretzels, and sneaking a dab of salt from the bottom of the bag.

One of my hallucinations was that Jed Clampett and Granny from the Beverly Hillbillies were in the kitchen at our table. Not the real actors; the characters. I even imagined that the church secretary, Linda seen them!

It went on for days, until I had a hallucination that I seen Charity; dead, covered in her own blood at the foot of Ashley’s bed. In one of my hallucinations a silky black demon cat had killed her! I was horrified. I cried out loud in Jesus’ name. I felt as though demons had taken over my mind and I was going crazy. Up to that point none of my hallucinations or visions had been mean or tried to hurt anything. I believed that the demons would fear Jesus’ name and leave. The next few days Ashley suggested that when I would get “company”, to check and look at the door and see if the lock was unlatched. We never latch the door closed when we have company.  I began to realize that the people I could see and hear were not really there.
