Low Cost Electricity Using Diesel Generator

A diesel generator is just another type of electrical generator. The only difference is that it uses diesel as its fuel to generate electricity. Basically, diesel generators and other type of electric generators operate on the same principle. It works by driving a shaft that has magnets at the end and rotate within coils of wire. This process generates electricity, and more specifically on alternating current.

Diesel generators are mainly used for buildings as a source of back-up power supply in case the city’s power supply fails.  These generators will come in handy especially when there are much electrical equipment that needs constant electricity like computer servers and refrigerated rooms.

Sometimes a diesel generator set is also used to power small communities. This is only applicable when if the community is out of reach of the main power grid. In this case, there are multiple generators connected to each other. This way, each generator works in unison with each other to provide the needed electricity.

A diesel generator can also come in a size that is small enough to fit in a trailer home and generate its own electricity.  All it needs is sufficient diesel fuel supply to power the generator for the needed duration.

An advantage of a diesel generator is that diesel fuel costs less than gasoline. This way, running a diesel generator is sometimes cheaper than purchasing electricity from the utility companies.

There are some disadvantages to these kinds of generators though. Since it is a diesel engine connected to an alternator, the engine produces fumes that may be harmful to the surroundings; especially if the surroundings have very poor ventilation. Since it runs on diesel fuel, it should be used in places that are of moderate temperature.

Diesel fuel has some characteristics that can make it difficult to ignite especially when the weather is cold. Sometimes the diesel fuel for the diesel generator turns gelatinous, making it hard to pump the fuel in the engine. In cold weather, this condition starting the engine can be difficult, as a diesel engine needs to be warm in order to start properly.

To sum it all up, a diesel generator is just a typical electric generator. The only difference is that it runs on diesel fuel instead of gasoline. Since it runs on diesel fuel it inherits the problems of a diesel engine. It becomes hard to start in cold weather and the fuel tank may harbor bacteria that feed off the diesel. The good thing about a diesel generator is that diesel fuel is cheaper than regular fuels. You can let it run longer at a lower cost.
