Living In a Foreign Country
Homesick living in a foreign country? What to expect in the first months?
Home is the place where you can relax, unwind, do whatever you fancy and above just be who you really are. After a hard day’s work most people welcome the thought of going back home.
You are in a foreign country which you should now call home. You have no friends or family, are living in the suburbs, staying with strangers, unemployed and the weather is depressing, a far cry from your hometown.
These are some things to expect:
Different weather patterns
Embrace the weather. Dress and play accordingly.
Blend In
Invest in good makeup, keep in touch with fashion, be trendy and always look perfectly polished. The keyword here is presentation.
Communicate
Build a network – professional or social. Smile, talk about the weather, share jokes, discuss events, and above all be courteous.
Shared Accommodation
Shared accommodation warrants implied household rules. Expect to adjust your habits:
- Wake up at the same time or before everybody else,
- Eat at the same time,
- Find a convenient time slot to use the bathroom and no singing in the shower,
- Behave and get along with your roommates.
Economic Realities
Stop converting prices to local currency. Pricing have various components in different parts of the world. Do track prices between different stores to find best deals.
Rewind and Rebuild
Obtain equivalence for your academic credentials, and rebuild your credit history from scratch.
