The incidence of fire shoots up during the summer, follow basic fire safety tips to make sure your household is safe from perils of fire.
Fire protection month is done every year during the summer. Although household fire is a scary thought, know that it is fully preventable. Observing these basic safety tips will take you a long way in making sure your household is safe from fire.
- Keep all sources of heat away from combustible materials. Flat iron, hair dyers, curling irons, and portable heating materials cause enough heat to start fire. Place them at a safe distance away from anything that can burn. Instruct children how to use these appliances responsibly.
- Don’t leave food unattended while cooking. If you leave the kitchen turn off the stove especially when we are frying, overheating the oil can start a fire. Keep children away from appliances when cooking. If you allow them to cook, supervise them closely and teach them safe cooking practices.
- Clear away objects that can feed a fire. Old boxes, linens, and papers in closets, or storage room can further fire. Store them outside the house as much as possible.
- Use caution with electrical appliances. If possible, plug only one appliance at a time into an outlet. Repair appliances with frayed or cracked cords before using. And before you leave the house, make sure everything is properly turned off.
- Be careful with candles. Don’t leave anything burning when you leave home or retire for night.
- Install smoke detectors and fire alarms. Install one or two at home and test them monthly to make sure they are still working.
- Have readily accessible fire extinguishers. They are still the most effective way to put off fires. Keep one and know how to use them properly.
