Jazz Up Your Living Room

Jazz up your living room for spring. It’s time for change and a new atmosphere. Color is the popular theme of the day and how better to bring color into your home than paint and beautiful material. Whats more it won’t cost you an arm and a leg if you do it yourself. Don’t be afraid to jump in and use a little elbow grease. And think how good you will feel when you see the results of your handiwork.

Spring is here and its time to breath new life into your living room and jazz it up the season. The sky is the limit with what you can do decorating with fabric, paint and a little elbow grease. It’s time for a change after a cold winter spent indoors. It’s time for a new living room, a new atmosphere and a new outlook. Paint will cover old tables and chests and give them a complete face lift. A pale blue or sage goes perfectly with spring. Paint is cheap and material is not terribly expensive at outlets. The combination will work wonders on walls, furniture, couches, chairs and window curtains.

A beautiful combination for your living room is pale blue painted table and chests, dark blue covers for the couch and floral blue and white chair covers. With this combination, pale blue paint for the walls with a white chair rail will look lovely. The same floral blue and white material as the chair covers will make nicely matching curtains. Sew covers for your throw pillows from all materials used in the room. This combination of colors will bring your living room up to date for the coming season.

Another popular color for spring is sage green. Paint a piece or two of furniture in sage green and another piece white. Paint the wall in sage green with a white chair rail. For an extra touch you could add sage and white decorative wall paper below the white chair rail. Sew the couch cover in dark green material and chairs in pale yellow material. Your curtains could be a combination of all the colors in the room or made from the yellow material of the chairs and edged with the green of the sofa or vise versa. Cover throw pillows with the materials used in the room. Now doesn’t that look jazzy?

This is a living room combination that I especially like. Paint your old furniture,(table, chests and so on) cream. Paint walls light tan, a shade or so darker than furniture. Sew couch covers in a deep peach colored material. Cover the chairs in tan and peach floral or stripes. Make curtains from the peach material used to cover the couch. Cover the throw pillows in cream colored material. These colors really make your living room stand out.

If you have never sewn slip covers it’s not as hard as it sounds. It is time consuming until you learn but anyone can do it. First measure your couch and chairs and figure out how much material you need. Walmart or Hancock often have good material at an excellent price. Sometimes you can find bundles of material at a thrift store. When you get your material home and get ready to begin, take all the cushions off and lay the material right side down to your couch. Do one section at a time, front, back, sides.

Smooth material down and be sure it’s straight. Leave enough room for seams and be sure there is tucking room all around the bottom.(under cushions) Now cut out one section at a time. Now hand sew the pieces together on the couch, right side turned to the couch. You can use long basting stitches. The cover will have to be sewn on the machine when you are sure it fits. Let the cover hang down long enough to get a straight edge around the bottom. Hem the cover around the bottom last. After you sew the cover for the couch, measure and make covers for the cushions. Make your chair covers the same way. See, and you thought you couldn’t do it.

If you want to practice first and have old sheets or curtains you plan to take to the thrift store, use those to make a practice cover. You will stand less chance of wasting good material. Good luck to you in your decorating and let me know how it works out. I will be interested in seeing your jazzy newly decorated living room.
